They’re coming.. - April 5, 2009

It’s 60 degrees outside, and I’m not out there thanks to this little backlog of photos I’ve built up..  But I’m getting through them and they should all be set by the time I go to bed tonight..  Here’s the list:

  • 3-22 – @ Love
  • 3-22 – @ Rebel
  • 3-24 – Miami Randoms
  • 3-25 – Deadmau5 @ Gansevoort Miami
  • 3-25 – Josh Gabriel @ South beach house party
  • 3-26 – Francois K @ Flawless House
  • 3-26 – Anjuna Night @ Karu & Y
  • 3-26 – Minus @ Karu & Y
  • 3-28 – Ultra Music Festival Saturday
  • 3-29 – Sunday School for Degenerates
  • 4-04 – NewMindSpace Pillow Fight @ Wall Street
  • 4-04 – Armin @ Roseland Ballroom

Between all of those, I started with about 5000 originals..  Do the math, and throw in my poor 2.5 year old laptop, and well the going is slow..    Cheers, Peter

Winter Music Conference ’09 - March 28, 2009

I’m in Miami for Winter Music Conference..   Not quite as many events as last year for me as I’m trying to have a little fun this time around.

If you’re looking for photos, I promise they’re coming.  I’m not back in NYC until Monday night and I’m going to need time to process them, so expect them to start trickling in starting Tuesday.   They’d be up sooner, but the internet reception on the beach sucks..  😉

Only in New York - March 6, 2009

As seen on my way home tonight..

Pissed at Apple - February 10, 2009

I use Aperture to handle and process photos and while it’s far from perfect, it has generally handled what I’ve needed.

Two weeks ago, I became the proud owner of a new 5d mark ii. It’s a great camera overall and has 21 megapixels of goodness.

I don’t always want that many pixels though, and the 5d complies by having a small raw mode of roughly 5 megapixels.. Great, and I gave it a shot for some parties recently.

So back to Apple and Aperture. Apple specifies the 5d mark ii as supported on it’s raw compatible page, with no footnotes saying only the full raw mode is supported. So I load these pictures in and get an ugly screen saying unsupported format.. Pissed is an understatement?

2+ years with Aperture and I’ve never had a reason to question it. And overnight I’m seriously trying out Lightroom from Adobe. Switching would be a huge blow to my confidence in Apple, but that’s where my gut is taking me.

SO: if you’re looking for some recent party photos, this is why they’re not up yet.

In light of Above & Beyond returning to NYC for the first time since May of last year, I’ve gone through my archives and posted all of the shows I’ve taken in which they were the stars..  So check them out here and I’ll see you on Feb 20!

Caught up! - January 17, 2009

Ok folks, everything from September 2007 through NYE 2008/9 is up, indexed, and should be easy to find..  By Artist, Venue, Date, or Promoter.  So enjoy, and prey that I’ll be able to keep this NY Resolution going indefinitely.

Side note:  I’m working on everything pre September 2007 as well.  I have photos going back as far as Jan 2004, so it may take a little bit to get them ALL online, but that’s the plan..  a set or two a week, should be doable with all the other insanity going on in life these days.

Resolutions - January 12, 2009

I’m not huge on making resolutions, partially because I keep them.  This year I’m making 2:

  • Process event photos asap
  • Deal with life tasks asap

Same theme, don’t get behind.  That being said, all, yes ALL, the pictures from 2008 are now up. They’re not all indexed in the blog quite yet, but they’re up. So enjoy!

NYE - December 31, 2008

New Years Eve is a mess. It’s always a mess, especially in New York.

  1. Everyone goes out, especially amateurs.. making it the single most amateur night there is, second to that first week of college when nobody had parents for the first time.
  2. Times Square, ‘nuf said
  3. Tourists. For as bad as the economy is right now, many foreigners planned trips here well before it went to shit.. I typically like tourists too, but on NYE, the sheer density of folks running around out of their minds, let alone running around when they don’t know where they are, crosses that boundary into bad insanity
  4. Parties are expensive.. $200+ to get in to places that are $20 the rest of the year.. that is, if you want to go before midnight.. Sure it’s open bar, even top shelf.. But a liter of Grey Goose is $40, and that’s roughly my upper bound on intoxication. The only recourse being the hope the folks working the madness are being paid above normal.
  5. Cabs.. Good luck. They’re not impossible before 9pm, but 12:15 though 2, forget it.

So why am I going out.. Well, why not? This year was rough in a number of ways for a lot of people, while the upcoming one holds a lot of promise. So tonight is the night to be done with the old, and welcome the new.

What’s the plan

  • Before Midnight – A House party. Seems to be what everyone is doing, so much so that nobody I know is going to a club pre-midnight.
  • 1am – UpStairs – Their final party from what I hear, and a good crew of beautiful folks I know are going..
  • after – open?!?

Later Options

  • NEW YEAR’S EVE LATE NIGHT BLOWOUT!, w/Matthew Dear, Drop The Lime, Michna & Mike Servito, 2AM @ (Le) Poisson Rouge – 158 Bleecker Street (Sullivan & Thompson), $30
  • KGB Presents New Years Eve @ Sullivan Room w. Coco Locos, 9pm-11am @ Sullivan Room, $30
  • DEEPCHORD pres. ECHOSPACE @ Studio B – Jan. 1st – Morning, 5am $10
  • New Year’s ReSolution, 65 Jay Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn, $40 open bar, 9pm-5am, Take F train to YORK Stop in Brooklyn. It’s the first stop from Manhattan. Walk down on Jay Street towards the water. Its only a block and half away from the train stop.

and well, whatever everyone txts me.. Happy New Year.

Status.. - November 22, 2008

Things have been a little busy lately..

First off, I’m changing day jobs..  The old one (at Bank of America) ended on Friday, and the new one starts on Monday up in Connecticut.  It’s one hell of a commute (3x longer than I’ve ever had) but everything else about the job is extremely positive.

Second, I’ve had a major hard drive failure lately.  The drive that has all my photos, music and movies on it died with no warning.  So while it is backed up frequently (after last years crash) the backups didn’t cover everything, and are MUCH slower to use to get things done.  So to those of you who’ve asked for something, or are waiting for pics to be put up, that’s why.  I’m sorry.

Third, I own an apartment in Hoboken and my tenant moved out a week ago.  They gave me 2 weeks notice, and pretty much abused the fact I didn’t make them sign a renewal lease back in April.  (They were getting married and wanted to move over the summer.  They gave notice on Halloween for Dec 1.  I’ll never be that nice again..)  So now I have to fix the things they broke, repaint the rooms they painted soo poorly, and find a new tenant in what is at the very least the worst rental market in 10 years.  Yeah, thanks.

Forth, I’m doing some revamp of the website itself.  I can do this remotely without access to the dead hard drive, so this makes more sense than it might seem priority wise.  This will have the benefit of indexing the photos by Artist, Venue, Promoter, and a few other things automatically for me.  So photos will end up being posted quicker, with lower effort on my part, while being easier to find on your parts..  win-win.

And finally, it’s one of my best buds from college’s bachelor party tonight..  Call the coroner now, we may be in need.

So once tonight’s over, the new job starts on Monday, maybe Jury Duty on Tuesday, Thanksgiving on Thursday, and I make it back Saturday to fix the apartment..  Then things will have a chance of being “normal”..  Thanks for being patient.

Computer failure.. - November 17, 2008

So almost exactly 11 months after my last hard drive failure, it’s happened again.  And “sucks” would be an understatement.  Thankfully, after last time, I regularly back up this 1.5 Terabyte drive (which was roughly 90% full).  I back it up to a network server (Buffalo Terastation) which has reliably served me for 3+ years now.

Even with the backups, I don’t have everything I had 2 weeks ago.  It had so much on it that a full backup/sync took roughly 24 hours.  So my regular schedule was to backup photos every day, and everything besides movies on a 2 week basis.  The movies are gone, and that’s a shame.

Also, file server access is 8-30 times SLOWER than the USB drive.  So any work I need to do right now is PAINFUL!

Going forward, I’m still painfully waiting for Apple to release a new Mac Pro. eta is next January I hope. Once I have that, I’ll have 3TB of raid 10 storage internally, 1.5 TB of external USB storage backing up daily, and 1.2 TB of file server storage backing up probably weekly.  That’s 4 copies of everything I care about, and I’m looking into a 5th copy, stored somewhere I don’t live.

Until then, I’m probably going to have 2 USB drives along with the file server.  That should keep me from needing to use the file server directly.
